Board Certified Dermatologist, Cosmetic Dermatologic Surgeon, Mohs Micrographic and Reconstructive Surgeon

Dr. Murad Alam is Vice-Chair of Dermatology; Professor of Dermatology, Otolaryngology, and Surgery; and Chief of the Section of Cutaneous and Aesthetic Surgery, at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine.  He received his undergraduate and medical degrees from Yale University, completed internship in internal medicine at the University of Michigan, and obtained residency training in dermatology at Columbia University.  He subsequently received fellowship training in laser and cosmetic surgery in Boston, and in Mohs micrographic surgery, in Houston.

 

An author of over 250 scientific publications, Dr. Alam is Editor of Archives of Dermatological Research, Associate Editor of the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, Associate Editor of Lasers in Medical Science, Associate Editor of the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology, Associate Editor of the International Journal of Women’s Dermatology, and Assistant Editor of Dermatologic Surgery.  He has previously served on the editorial board of JAMA Dermatology.  Dr. Alam is series co-editor of the Procedures in Cosmetic Dermatology books, and overall has edited 20 books, including Evidence-Based Procedural Dermatology, Cosmetic Dermatology in Skin of Color, Requisites in Cosmetic Dermatology, Body Rejuvenation, Non-Surgical Tightening and Lifting, Treatment of Leg Veins, and Merkel Cell Carcinoma.  

 

Dr. Alam has served as President of the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, and Treasurer of the Women’s Dermatologic Society and is current Vice-President of the Illinois Dermatologic Society.  He is also member of the Board of Directors of the American Academy of Dermatology, the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery, the Association of Professors of Dermatology, and the American Dermatological Association.  He has previously served on the Boards of the American College of Mohs Surgery and of the Noah Worcester Society. Dr. Alam is the Dermatology Advisor to the American Medical Association-Current Procedural Terminology Committee, which is responsible for defining and characterizing medical procedures performed in the US; a member of the Nonmelanoma Skin Cancer Panel of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network, which develops cancer guidelines; a Delegate to the United States Pharmacopeia Convention, an independent nonprofit organization that sets quality standards for medicines, food ingredients, and dietary supplements;  and a Voting Member on the General and Plastic Surgery Devices Panel of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).  Dr. Alam is vice-president of the Blade and Light Society, an organization of volunteer dermatologic surgeons who perform charitable mission work to treat skin cancers and train surgical dermatologists in underserved countries.  

 

Dr. Alam’s clinical practice includes the treatment of skin cancer, as well as cosmetic dermatology, and laser surgery. He serves as the director of the Northwestern University ACGME-approved fellowship training program in Micrographic Surgery and Dermatologic Oncology, and its ASDS-approved fellowship training program in Cosmetic Dermatologic Surgery.  

 

Dr. Alam’s research, which includes clinical trials and multicenter cohort studies, addresses the effectiveness, side effects, and patient acceptance of different surgical and laser treatments.  Dr. Alam has a particular interest in evidence-based medicine, including the selection and measurement of outcomes.  Under his direction, Northwestern has been the coordinating site of DermBASE, a multicenter database for gathering data to improve skin cancer treatment.  Dr. Alam is the chair of the US-based IMPROVED group, which is developing internationally applicable core outcome sets pertaining to skin cancer and other dermatologic conditions.  He is also the director of CISTERN, an international collaboration for the development of clinical practice guidelines for invasive soft-tissue tumors.

Dr. Simon Yoo is Associate Professor of Dermatology (Cutaneous and Aesthetic Surgery), Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery and Surgery (Organ Transplantation); and Director of Resident Surgical Education at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine. He received his medical degree from Yale University, completed internship in internal medicine at Harvard Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and obtained residency training in dermatology at Johns Hopkins University. He subsequently received fellowship training in Mohs micrographic surgery at University of California (San Francisco). Dr. Yoo is an expert in nail disorders and leg veins.

Frances Walocko, MD, MEng

Dr. Frances Walocko is the cosmetic surgery fellow in the ASDS-accredited cosmetic dermatologic surgery fellowship at Northwestern University. She will complete her second fellowship year in micrographic surgery and dermatologic oncology. Dr. Walocko received her undergraduate degree in chemical engineering and Master’s degree in pharmaceutical engineering at the University of Michigan. She received her medical degree also at the University of Michigan. Dr. Walocko completed her dermatology residency at the University of Texas Southwestern (UTSW) in Dallas, TX. She has authored numerous publications within the scope of dermatologic surgery and is most interested in laser medicine and surgery, facial rejuvenation, and reconstructive surgery.

Dr. Frances Walocko is the cosmetic surgery fellow in the ASDS-accredited cosmetic dermatologic surgery fellowship at Northwestern University. Jamie Gruzlewski is a board certified, licensed Physician Assistant. She completed her PA training at Midwestern University in Downers Grove, IL, achieving highest honors and a Masters of Science in Physician Assistant Studies. Prior to PA school, she graduated with highest honors and a BS from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.

She is an active member of the Society of Dermatology Physician Assistants, the American Academy of Physician Assistants, and the Illinois Academy of Physician Assistants.

As a PA, she has received specialized training in both medical and cosmetic dermatology, emergency medicine, urgent care, and as a clinical preceptor for physician assistant and medical students. 

Jamie has a special interest in melanoma skin cancer, acne management, and cosmetic dermatology. 

Outside of work she enjoys spending time with her family and cat, outdoor sports, and weight training.​
