Platelet-rich plasma (also known as “PRP”) is a treatment for various forms of hair loss. While commonly believed to be an inevitable result of aging, there are steps that can be taken to stop or even reverse alopecia or hair loss. PRP for hair loss increases blood supply and growth factors to the hair follicle, and increases thickness of the hair shaft. This slows the process of hair loss and triggers the growth cycle of the hair.
Our board-certified dermatologists at the Northwestern Skin and Laser are experts in the treatment of hair loss with platelet-rich plasma and have published several peer-reviewed articles on this subject. We are currently the lead site for ongoing PRP research in conjunction with several other institutions across the nation. We are happy to set up a consultation for you to discuss PRP and your individual treatment goals.
What is involved in the PRP treatment?
First, a member of our team will draw your blood and spin it in a machine called a centrifuge. This separates out the red blood cells, the platelet poor plasma, and the platelet rich plasma. The platelet rich plasma is then reinjected into the desired area of the scalp using a syringe.
How Effective Is PRP?
Research has revealed that PRP has produced reliable hair-loss reversal in patients. Of the 262 participants participating in the first 11 studies, a significant percentage saw hair growth and increased density. Later tests taking place in 2019 involved 460 people, resulting in even more evidence that this treatment was effective. Studies are still ongoing, but testimonials from patients all over the world continue to show that PRP is an effective method for restoring meaningful hair growth.
What is PRP used to treat?
We typically treat male and female pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) with PRP. Occasionally, we treat other forms of hair loss including alopecia areata and scarring forms of hair loss.
How long is the downtime?
There is essentially no downtime with PRP. We recommend you refrain from exercise, washing your hair, and using any topical hair and scalp products for 24 hours after treatment.
What will I need to do prior to treatment?
We will plan to see you for consultation prior to your treatment. At this time, we will obtain a detailed history, discuss the treatment plan in detail, and answer any questions you may have. If desired, we can often perform the first treatment the day of your consultation.
When will I see results?
Patients tend to start seeing results after the first or second treatment with PRP. At the end of your treatment cycle, if you are pleased with your results, we often recommend a maintenance treatment 2-3 times a year to maintain these results. We will discuss expected individual results at your consultation based on your treatment needs.
